State Explains Delays in Florida Child Support Payments

Recent delays in child support payments processed by the Florida Department of Revenue posed potential difficulties for over 200,000 parents statewide who depend on timely payments after divorce.

February 11, 2012 /Mens Interest PR News/ -- Divorce presents financial challenges for many couples, due to basic issues like division of property, unequal income levels and the need to support separate households going forward. Child support and spousal support (alimony) usually play a crucial role in ensuring that children and spouses are adequately provided for after a husband and wife part ways.

Recent delays in child support payments processed by the Florida Department of Revenue posed potential difficulties for over 200,000 ex-spouses statewide who depend on a timely check for education expenses, grocery purchases and other expenditures. Payment of funds that had already been deducted from the other spouse's income arrived late for many in early January.

The department apologized for the inconvenience, attributing the child support delays to a computer system upgrade. Child Support e-Services functions have also been unavailable, preventing clients from checking whether payments have been disbursed. The department maintains that system improvements will better serve the needs of mothers and fathers who depend on payments processed by the state.

Child Support Enforcement in Florida

The state Child Support Enforcement System was established in 1994 to provide services related to proving paternity as well as obtaining, enforcing and modifying child support orders in most of Florida's counties. In 2011, the system collected more than $1 billion in payments and provided child support services to nearly 1 million children. However, the state does not handle closely related visitation or custody issues.

Florida divorce lawyers provide comprehensive representation, from child support negotiations and enforcement of a support order, to modifications of child custody orders due to a parent's need to relocate. A consultation with a family law attorney can provide targeted advice to spouses who have questions about the many aspects of the divorce process.
