American Government Launches New Hotline for Immigration Detainees
With a simple phone call, those being held as suspected illegal immigrants will now be able to directly inform federal authorities that they believe a mistake has been made.
February 12, 2012 /Mens Interest PR News/ -- Many of those detained on immigration charges have a tough row to hoe. Confined in a strange place, perhaps facing communication barriers and often without a keen understanding of the legal process they are subject to, immigration detainees can have a difficult time asserting their rights.
Of course, the best resource for anyone facing immigration issues is a skilled deportation defense lawyer. But for immigration detainees without immediate access to an attorney, a new government hotline may be able to help provide some short-term answers.
Local Law Enforcement Should Inform Detainees of Available ICE Hotline
Starting in 2012, local law enforcement officials will be asked to fill out a new form whenever they detain someone on immigration charges. A copy of the form must be provided to detainees. Importantly, the form advises detainees that they cannot be confined for more than 48 hours on an immigration hold, and it also lists the toll free number for the new detainee hotline.
By calling (855) 448-6903, detainees can speak to a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement representative 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The hotline is geared towards detainees who believe they may, in fact, be U.S. citizens, or who think they may have been victims of a crime.
Hotline personnel will be charged with collecting information from anyone who calls in and forwarding it to the relevant ICE Enforcement and Removal Operation Field Office for a prompt, appropriate response. For those detainees uncomfortable with English, translation services will be available on the hotline in several other languages.
Hotline to Help Alleviate Wrongful Detainment Concerns, But Immigration Attorneys Still Key
The hotline is the latest ICE development amidst controversy pertaining to local law enforcement agencies' ability to detain suspected illegal immigrants; allegations have arisen across the country of immigrant detainees being denied their rights. Hopefully, the new hotline will help wrongfully detained individuals get a quick response from the appropriate federal agency, soothing some concerns of overreaching in immigration enforcement.
While the hotline is a step in the right direction, it is certainly no substitute for a skilled immigration lawyer. If you or a loved one is facing the threat of deportation, contact an immigration attorney today to help bring your immigration issue to a positive resolution.
