The New "Ten Most Wanted"

The NTSB has identified the ten most troubling safety issues that face our nation's transportation.

July 23, 2011 /Mens Interest PR News/ -- Many people may not realize that the FBI does not have a monopoly on "Ten Most Wanted" lists. Since 1990, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released a list of the top ten safety issues that face our nation's transportation infrastructure.

This year, the NTSB revised the list. The list is loosely divided into issues affecting aviation safety, road safety and public transportation safety. The top ten "most wanted" safety regulations this year focus on:
- Safety management systems
- Bus occupant safety
- Use of recorders in different modes of transportation
- Runway safety
- General aviation safety
- Pilot and air traffic controller professionalism
- Teen driver safety
- Alcohol-impaired driving
- Motorcycle safety
- Human fatigue

Research indicates that each of these areas could benefit from significant improvements, whether through in-depth studies, state and federal legislation or state and federal regulation. For example, fatigue, education and professionalism are priorities for air traffic controllers because this intense, important profession requires people to be focused and attentive twenty-four hours a day, every day of the year. In another area, research by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration determined that an individual may drive while impaired up to 88 times before being arrested. Another cause for concern involves teen drivers. Although teens make up only seven percent of the total driving population, teenagers are involved in 13 percent of all fatal accidents.

In the past, legislators and regulating agencies have used the NTSB's most wanted list to shape their laws and rules. For example, in December of 2005, the Federal Aviation Administration published new rules entitled the "Air Carrier and Commercial Operator Training Programs" to educate pilots and other aviation professionals in the commuter airline industry. Commuter airline safety had made the list in 1995 because the commuter airline industry suffered twice as many accidents as passenger aircraft.

Now, legislators and regulating agencies will almost surely consider the new NTSB safety issues as they propose laws and regulations. Human fatigue affects all modes of transportation. In the area of public transportation, lawmakers and policymakers should consider strengthening laws so that they require proper restraints in public transportation systems. The nation's roadways would be safer if lawmakers followed the recommendations of the NTSB and created comprehensive drivers education programs and included graduated license programs.

These are only a few examples of the many laws and regulations that may arise out of the NTSB's Ten Most Wanted List recommendations. Hopefully, state and federal lawmakers will take heed of these safety issues and take swift action to make the nation a safer place.
